Christmas Time Is Here

Christmas is absolutely one of my favourite times of year. Everything is covered in snow and it feels so great to watch an old movie while drinking hot chocolate. Tonight was the night in my family where we take our annual Christmas photo's. I chose to wear the periwinkle blue dress I found below.

I actually found the dress today! I went to a thrift store in my city that I had never visited before and found out it has a lovely selection of vintage clothing. This dress was there and they were selling it for only $20, so of course I had to buy it. I absolutely love how it fits me too.

I think the bow on the waist is just gorgeous.

Adding to my collection, I also found another 1950's ceramic poodle! She is just so adorable and I am thinking of calling her Lucy.

Family History

Hello lovelies!
For some reason today I had the urge to find out about my family history and heritage. After school I went over to my cousin`s house to see my grandmothers old photos and important family documents. It was harder to research my mothers side of the family, but I did find some photos and information about them with the help of my cousin and an ancestry site. First though, I researched my fathers side of the family and found out something which is quite exciting for a history nerd like me.

I am descended from a filles du roi, also known as the King`s Daughters! Around 1660, there were a lot of French men in Canada, but barely any women. Because of this fact the King sent around 800 girls over to get married to the men in Canada, and I am related to one of them! Her name was Jeanne Pelletier and she lived in Paris, France before she was sent to Canada.

Anyways, I will show you some of the photo's of my mother's side of the family. They came from Ukraine and Russia, both around 1900 or so.

One of these beautiful ladies in the photo above is my great grandmother, who came here from what was Russia at the time. Sadly I don't know which one is my great grandmother because my grandmother barely knew her. My grandmother was six when her mom died, and unfortunately because of this we don't know a lot about her.

I love what these ladies are wearing, and those glasses are brilliant!

I believe this lovely lady is my Great Aunt Anne. 

 How handsome is he?

I absolutely love this photo. No one in my family knows who these people are anymore, but I still hold this close to my heart. They all just look so happy.

Winter Formal

At my school last night there was an event called the Winter Formal. It consists of a banquet and dance for the grade twelves who are graduating in 2013. That includes me. I went to it with a few friends and it was a great time.

This is what I wore, a green, yellow and white dress from the 1950's. It has a sheer top layer with a plain yellow slip dress underneath. It is my favourite piece of clothing and probably the most beautiful thing I own. It fits me amazingly and I got quite a few compliments on it. You cannot see in this picture, but I am also wearing my good pair of seamed stockings.

Yesterday I received a blog award from the author of one of my favourite blogs, Evie's Tea Room, which is quite exciting!

These are the questions that Ivy asked me. 

1 - Who is your favorite actress from vintage film?

I would say that my favourite actress from a classic film would be one of the more obvious choices, Marilyn Monroe. I absolutely loved her in Bus Stop, and I have always been jealous of the costumes she got to wore. 

2 - Who is your favorite actor from vintage film?

James Dean is for sure, even though I have only watched his film Rebel Without a Cause. He is just so handsome heh. 

3 - What era of clothing do you love most?

It varies usually from month to month. At the moment, I am really enjoying late 1950's to early 1960's style. I love how curve hugging the clothes are and they work quite well with my shape. 

4 - If you could have played the starring role in any old movie, what would it be?

I would have loved to played Peggy Van Alden in Jailhouse Rock, alongside Elvis. It is one of my favourite movie and who wouldn't want to kiss Elvis? 

5 - What is your favorite piece of vintage clothing you own?

I would say it is an absolutely divine 1950's party dress. In my next post I will be featuring it, I wore it to my school's winter formal banquet and dance. 

6 - If you could have an alter ego, what would your name be?

It would probably be Bettie Rage, the name I used to use when I was involved in roller derby. 

7 - Favorite artist/painter?

I absolutely love Vincent Van Gogh. His work seems so magical and the uses of colours is brilliant. I would love to see his paintings in real life.

8 - Do you collection anything? If so, what do you collect?

I collect spaghetti poodles from the 1950's, preferably in white or pastel colours. At the moment I have three, one pink and two white. They are just so adorable, and eventually I hope to have a large collection of them.

9 - What is your favorite flower?

I really do adore pink roses, or any type of rose for that matter. 

10 - If you were to get married in the past, what time period would you choose?

I could imagine it being amazing to be married around 1920 or so. I love the dresses from back then and I would think the party afterwards would be quite crazy. 

11 - What do you enjoy most about blogging?

What I love about blogging is that I can show people what I wear, and what my sense of style is all about. I also hope to inspire people to wear what they truly like and want to wear, instead of what society tells them they should be wearing.

Snapshots of the Past

I really do love to look at old family pictures. It is so interesting to see people you are related to in the prime of their lives. My grandmother Rita, has quite the collection of old family photo's. Below are some of my favourites in her collection and all of these people are in some way related to me.

I absolutely love this first picture. It is of my grandmother Rita, and my grandfather Paul. It was taken at one of her birthday parties and this was the first night they actually met. I find it so amazing that there is actually a picture of it! Her dress looks absolutely amazing too.

The second one is of my Great Aunt Berangere. She was the sister of Rita. My grandmother told me that she always used to dress like a queen, as you can see in this picture. And look at those shoes! I wish I could find ones that looked like that today.

This is Berangere again, the same lady who was in the second picture. She looks like she could be a pinup girl, doesn't she?

This is of my grandfather Paul. All I can think of when I see this photo is that he would be considered a hipster today haha.

This is my great grandfather, Thomas. Isn't he a handsome man? As you can tell, it was taken in 1923. I would absolutely love it if someone could help figure out where the uniform was from or what country it belonged to.

Lastly we found this photo of my grandfathers parents. It was taken in 1929, though I am not exactly sure where. Their names were Edwidge and Thomas, the man you see in the photo above this one. Edwidge's hair looks so lovely, it is so characteristic of the 1920's.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

Hello everyone! Today was a very eventful day, considering how much snow my city got. It is knee deep in most places! This is my backyard at the moment.

Since there was so much snow, I of course needed my heaviest winter jacket. It came quite in handy today. My truck just so happened to get stuck in my school's parking lot and was there for most of the day.

An Introduction and Thrift Scores

Hello everyone! 

First off, my name is Katie and I am a 17 year old vintage lover from the middle of Canada.
My favourite decades are the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. On my blog I plan to post pictures of vintage items I admire, actors and actresses and clothing I find in vintage or thrift stores. This is me.

I hope to update this blog about two or three times a week at the least.

In the past two weeks I have found a two amazing things at my local Value Village. The first is a very early 1960's dress with an adorable neon green, orange and yellow flower print.

It is the cutest thing ever though two of the decorative buttons are missing fabric. That shouldn't be too hard to fix so I am happy. I bought it for only $6.99

The next item I found was a wonderful 1960s pale yellow hat. In fact, it also matches the dress I found above. I was quite surprised to find it, because most vintage hats I find do not fit my head which is a big disappointment. Thankfully this one did and I absolutely love it! I got it on a half price day and it was only $1. 

It does have to be worked on a bit, some of the fabric is starting to wear off on the top. I am thinking that I will sew some white satin flowers around the spots that are wearing off. It is a fantastic summer hat.
